What is shipping protection?
Shipping protection protects your shipments against losses like damages, porch-piracy, and lost items. When you file valid claims, your business can be reimbursed, mitigating shipping risk. While carriers only offer declared value coverage, which is only the bare minimum required by law, the InsureShield Program does so much more.
The difference between carrier liability and InsureShield shipping protection?
The short answer, it’s a night and day difference.
- Carrier liability is the standard liability offered by the carrier for a shipment, in the event of loss or damage (i.e., up to $100 for small package, or $25/lb. for less than truckload (LTL). Excess liability is coverage excess-value coverage (i.e., more than the carrier’s standard liability), up to the cost of the shipment.
- With carrier liability, the shipper is the one who must prove that the loss or damage happened while the goods were in the carrier’s physical control – this is most often very difficult to do, and time consuming! However, shipping protection can be customized to your business and protect you in the event of loss, damage, and porch piracy.
- Carrier liability is also based on small-print terms and a web of governing statutes, some of which date to the 1930’s. At their core, all the statutes allow carriers to limit their exposure and exempt a variety of situations from liability.

Disclamer – Insurance coverage is offered through UPS Capital Insurance Agency, Inc., a licensed insurance producer. If you elect protection for your shipment, it will be insured under a policy of insurance (the “Policy”), but you are not an insured under the Policy. In the event of a loss covered under such Policy, any resulting claim payment will be directed to you as a loss payee. All insurance-related information is provided by UPS Capital and does not in any way alter or amend the terms, conditions, or exclusions of the Policy. Insurance coverage is not available in all jurisdictions or on all shipments.
